OK, this is weird..Rabbits fix gearbox!!!
A little while ago I lost 4th gear on my 2005 156 JTS and after checking through these forums I had a fairly good idea at the possible causes (swarf, selector fork, etc). I decided to save some cash just incase it turned out to be none of those and turned into an expensive job, I still used the car daily and just skipped from 3rd to 5th.
Well, last week I was driving back from delivering my second born to school when I happened accross a herd of rabbits in the road. Unable to avoid them I wiped out a good proportion of the flock (sorry). I heard some of them bounce around under the car and wham!!!....4th gear returned!!! After nearly a week it is still selecting beautifully, no stiffness or jumping out.
It's got me thinking, is there anything under the car that could have been the problem and was fixed (temporarily or perminantly) by running over Bugs Bunny and his friends??....Or is it just coincidence?
