That sounds like a sticky solenoid on the starter motor - it energises when you turn the key, but isn't sending current through to get the motor to spin and start the car. The solution on my suds, 33s and sprints was to firmly smack the starter with something heavy to jolt the solenoid, and it would then work fine for a while. The proper cure is open, clean and refit the solenoid and starter motor. Trouble is, the starter on your 156 is tucked in behind the engine block and access is limited, to say the least - maybe possible to get to it from below, but realistically not easy unless you can get it on a hoist.
So - get someone else to turn the key, listen - where is the clicking coming from? Over by the battery? Could be the relay (plastic cube with an electromagnetic switch inside it which sends current to the solenoid, down by the starter motor) - if so you can replace that and it should sort the problem. Behind the engine - that's a bit harder to get access to - probably best to get an auto electrician to sort it.
