156 2.4 JTD Low Power when cold
I have been following the excellent guidance and information on your site since buying my Alfa as a 2nd car 18 months ago, but prompted to join because of a perplexing problem with my 02 156 2.4 JTD.
The car, 18 months ago, was a low mileage (38K) diesel and apart from the common wishbone / wheel bearing / battery / siezed airbox issues has been great and recently hard to prise away from my son.
The problem I have now is that when starting from cold it seems to be in a "limp home" mode with no or little power and impossible to drive in normal traffic. After about 10 mins when the temperature rises to approx 70 dgerees the engine comes back to its normal self and will run and pull throughout the rev range until switched of again. During this period the car performs perfectly and will run for as long as its is not switched off.
I have tried most of the pointers suggested in other posts Turbo pipes / ECU reset / Turbo actuator / MAF sensor to no avail. Also when in this mode there is no engine malfuction light although I presume something may be logged as a fault code. The only pointer I have a present is that when running the temp gauge settles around 70 dgerees which may mean a thermostat is required but would that cause this type of fault?
Also is there such a device as a cold start sensor and if so is it a likely candidate and where can it be found?
Sorry to be so wordy but hope someone can give me a pointer.
Thanks again for all you excellent info.
