Small update on this - made some calls to some main dealers today, all came back with quotes for new key from 250-300.
Also spoke to a chap at Solo Italia in Eynsham who is confident that a second hand key can be used, when combined with a replacement key blade that is cut to match the original. Once the second hand key and the newly cut blade are spliced together, he stated that they can then program the car to accept that key to function.
There seems to be some conflicting opinions on the feasibility of this. I'm tempted to try it but then am also tempted to stop sodding about and just pay the dealers rate and save some time...
I suppose the lack of anyone anywhere on the internet stating that they have achieved success with the buggering around with old keys/new blades does suggest that it is indeed not possible. Were it possible it would be widely known I suppose.
Back to the option of getting a new key ordered from Alfa and then linked to the car, can anyone recommend an Indie in the Oxfordshire area that I can try, the price of the key itself from Alfa must surely have some scope for discount?
