Please, please help - jtd 10 valve cam sensor wierd problem
This problem has foxed three people so far; my 2001 10 valve jtd has the dreaded engine management light on, with a fault code for the cam sensor showing on the Alfa diagnostic. But Simon at longstones, my local dealer has changed so far the cam sensor, cam belts, shimmed the tappets, tested the connectivity to the ECU, and as of this morning replaced the ECU, all to no avail. Fault code/ dash light still on. The weird, weird thing is ... She is running beautifully! No limp mode, correct idle speed, pulls strongly right through the rev range with no indication she now has nearly 150 thou mileage on her. As I understand it the cam sensor simply reads a gap in a disc on the end of the shaft, and sends the signal directly to the ECU, hence the change. There is a plug and play tuning box fitted, but this been on for nearly five years and has never been a problem, and I believe only has an influence on the fuelling, so logically is 'downstream' of the cam sensor. We have run her with the box plugged and unplugged with no change. Si also timed her from scratch, just in case my heavy right foot managed to jump a tooth on the belt, which was itself replaced less than 30 thou miles ago, with all pulleys, tensioners. SO WHAT IN THE NAME OF ZEUS' BUTTHOLE IS GOING ON!!?! All replys most gratefully received - even if you are only laughing at my misfortune !! PS Steve and Simon at Longstones have spent hours and hours on this, and this morning told me there would be NO CHARGE !!!! Yep, you read this right ( I have paid for the belts/ sensor etc, obviously, ... I mean they are great, not totally mental!!!) but still that is what I call awesome service that deserves a Mention in Despatches at the very least. A quantity I specialise in... So I still have my sense of humor, for now. But I have just cleaned my shotgun...!! Please help guys I love my Alfas to the point of obsession and take it personally if they are not totally serviceable. Actually my darling wife would say I am well past the point of no return... Lost to the world of Alfa Romeo !!!
