I was down at Airton Motors(Dublin) this morning getting parts for my car.On the way home I took a de-tour and decided to drive home by the coastline via DunLaorigh,Blackrock and Sandymount.
While sitting at the lights a black 2 litre 147 with chrome wheels that was a car in front of me spotted me in his rear view mirror and started reving his engine. He took off from the lights and pulled over into the slow lane of the dual carrigeway to let me drive up and past him.As I was going by him he rolled his window down and shouted at me "Wanna a race"?.Now Im not one for racing around on public roads, but I decided just this once I would let him "try" to race me.
Up to the next set of lights at this point, the guy still reving his engine at me.I never once reved my car, just sat there waiting for a green light. On comes the green light and I accelerated.
My car completely trounced all over his 2 litre.I was about 100 metres down the road already and as I looked back in my rear view mirror he was only just past the traffic lights. He tried to catch up to me,keep with me on the bends and even had his car screaming in every gear to try to keep with me.When we got to another set of lights he pulled up beside me and said "Fu*king hell man, thats a fast car"
.My reply was"I know it is,its a 1.6 litre turbo".Its only 280bhp.Well the look on his face was one that I will never forget
I was in stitches laughing at him.
His reply was "Alfa dont make a 147 turbo".I reved the car,the turbo spooled up and the wastegate started to open up,then he heard the dump valve.I said "Alfa didnt make this car,my mechanic and I did"He then asked me if I could pull over as he wanted to see the engine bay and take a picture of the car with his camera phone.I said I was in a hurry and that I couldnt stop.So on I want and left him to eat my exhaust fumes.
About 10 minutes later some man(about mid 40s) driving a dark grey 1.6 litre 147 saw me overtake a lorry and decided to "try" and follow me.Traffic was heavy at this stage and I was taking it easy. This guy was driving right on the back of my car so I decided to floor my car and leave him behind.Foot to the floor,Bang into 3rd gear, the turbo spooling up rapidly the wastegate screaming open, then 4th gear.
Speedo was reading 110mph in 4th at only 6000 revs(engine now revs to 8200rpm),still 5th gear to go.I looked back and the guy in the 147 was just a little spec on the horizon so I eased off the pedal. When I got to the East-Link toll bridge,he managed to catch up with me,and like the previous 147,he tried to beat me off the line away from the toll bridge but just couldnt keep with me.
If either of these 2 Alfa 147 drivers are members here, then say hello and thanks for some good fun this morning.
You tried ur best.
I then slowly cruised home via Clontarf and Sutton(lovely smooth twisty coastal road) and sat down to a coffee and a slice of strawberry cheesecake.
I think alot of Irish Alfa owners think that Im just another bloke with a an Alfa 147 with big wheels.I proved 2 of those drivers wrong today. Not bad for a wee 1.6 litre engine
Today was the first time I have trashed my car from a standing start. Its very very quick off the line and very stable too especially at speed through the bends.
Its great fun when the guy who thinks he can start a race with u and that he will beat u ends up getting his ass handed to him on a plate.
Now for some more mapping next week and bring the boost up to 1 bar.300 bhp here I come
I might even bring her to Enniskillen Airport(Northern Ireland) to do the quater mile run thats on in June.It would be nice to embarrass some 1.8 Golf GTIs and some Integra Type Rs,maybe even the odd Scoobie too.
