The transponder is a small (grain of rice-sized) chip in the key - no electrical connection involved. Unless the key has come apart and the chip has been physically lost, its unlikely that it has gone faulty, unless I guess its been stored close to a strong magnetic source (and thats pure surmise on my part), although if it doesn't work on its own but does with the other key in close proximity - which means that its the other key's transponder thats doing the business - then I guess the chip must be lost/faulty. No alternative to an expensive replacement key from Alfa, I'm afraid - unless you tape the transponder from your working key inside the column shroud...but then you'll have two keys that work but no immobiliser.....
