The piston just has to be pushed back on the front calipers, no special tool required other than maybe a 'G' clamp as they can't be pushed by hand. Only the rears need winding (pushing and turning requiring a special tool) back owing to the way the handbrake works.
Does it sound like the exhaust is blowing? If there is a hole it will most likely fail the MOT emissions test, if you're not sure wait till then.
The rocker cover replacement and spark plugs should be around £100, the brake pads and discs a little less and are all easily doable....probably 2 Haynes spanners - heh!
It would be a shame as you've just spent all that money on the gearbox to give up on it, but if you're not mechanically minded I understand your dilemma. There most certainly does come a point where there's no point carrying on, and even if you do the jobs above there'll be something else next month. 10 year old, 100k mile cars need money spending.....regularly.
All the best
Loose - not close, compact, or tight in structure or arrangement
Lose - to part with or come to be without, as through theft, accident, negligence, etc.
