I spilt the upper balljoint, then removed the top mounting by taking the four nuts off. Then remove the bolt that goes through the bottom fork and arm, and pulled the strut down to get clearance. I was then able to lift the top mounting over the strut bolts, twist it and pull it out of the car: wishbone and all. But I didn't have to take the fork off, or get the complete strut out. Didn't diturb the steering joint either.
It could be as I've got lowered Sportpack suspension, the strut is a little bit shorter than standard.
I did read on a usenet forum a while back of someone that did manage to get the wishbone bolt out and replaced in with out disturbing the strut at all. They did need a spring compressor to get the clearance through the spring though.
