156 v6 gear change trouble???

My mate recently bought a 156 v6 after driving mine and falling in love! But, his is a 51 plate, with only 64k on the clock and he seems to be having trouble changing whether it is fast (especially) or even slow, from 6th or 5th into 4th, and sometime 3rd into 4th, it just wants to crunch.

Anyone any ideas, especially with it being such low mileage?

Worst case scenario?
Worn syncromesh between gears which inevitably means a new gearbox or at the very least a re-build or used replacement...
A used gearbox is usually cheap enough but a nightmare to replace...
Word from the wise:
Take the opportunity to check/ replace the clutch assembly and starter motor if a gearbox is needed and if a future investment in a Q2 LSD Differential, now is the time to do it all in one go to prevent future hassle

I would hazzard at an educated guess though that the gearbox oil is either old or very low (there is a small dip stick at the rear of the box near the differential that you can check)...

Replacing the gearbox oil is easy enough DIY and can dramatically improve things so worth doing first. The is a drain plug at the bottom of the diff and using a pipe and funnel you fill up via the dip stick pipe for the gearbox.
Another issue could be the cables for the gear selector being out of position slightly which can make it difficult to get into gear, worth taking to a specialist to get them set up correctly to eliminate this as a possibility.

Or at an outside possibility, it could be even swarf in the gearbox end plate could be preventing smooth selection, although this affects TS gearboxes more so and i'm not sure if the V6 manual is susceptible to the same issue...
Here is a link to the repair process if it is swarf preventing smooth operation....
How To... Remedy a non selecting 4th Gear
Give Jamie Porter an email and he can confirm if it is this that is causing the issue or even if its the same principle on a V6 manual
Hope this helps mate
