Alfa 156 2.4JTD Intermittent starting/ cutting out

Hoping someone will be able to help, my 156 is having a starting problem as follows.

Key in to ignition turn to MAR (start position) everything fine
As soon as key is turned to AVV (Engine start position) everything dies does not try to turn over it’s like the battery has been disconnected (this is not every time but is getting more regular).
Pop the bonnet give the positive on the battery a wiggle + she will start up (normally first time but sometimes takes two goes).

More info:
I have tried disconnecting giving all the connectors a good clean + reconnecting + this seems to work for a few days of everything being ok then the problem starts again.
Yesterday it actually cut out whilst I was driving so had to pull up + pop the bonnet etc

Can anyone help?

Sounds like your battery clamp is not good or the post on the battery is so worn that its not being clamped properly. Next time try loosening the clamp and then give the clamp a few light hammer taps to seat it firmly on the battery post before tightening the clamp. Keith
