There are several titles I could give this post:
1. Alfenia's Diesel sound is gone
2. Alfa mechanics are Butcher's
3. The difference a little TLC can make
4. ****** me, Alfenia really CAN go !!!!
All 4 are applicable.
Before starting to replace the oil I had noticed that the *diesel* sound upon start up was gone !!!
I now put this to the fact that the Bardahl Engine Cleaning product has un-gunking the oil passage ways to the variator. I 1st noticed that Alfenia was *mad to go* when travelling home from work. When doing 75mph on the motorway in 5th gear she was well up for it...... so I dropped her to 3rd & swooooshhhhhh up she went to 7200....with.......wait for it....... a *power surge* at approx 6000 rpm. ....... whow did I smile
This afternoon I changed the oil in Alfenia.
A. Removing the sump plug was the 1st challenge.
As you can see from the pic posted below that *some-one* [ presumably an AR mechanic from the garage that serviced her from new ] messed up the Torx [ M50 sized ] sump plug. I had to use a vise-grip to grip & loosen it. Then once *cracked* I was able to use the M50 torx fitting. When I had the sump plug out I ground down 2 flat edges [ marked B-B ] in order to tighten it with a 22mm open jawed spanner. I will get a new sump plug for the next service, in 10K miles.
B. The old oil
that came out was very very black. This is a combination of the Bardahl Engine Cleaning product I put in yesterday & because the oil had not been replaced in a looooong time.
C. The oil filter
was STUCK onto the oil cooler assembly. I reckon that this filter had not been changed in a very loooooooooong time. I had to *jam* the oil cooler, to stop it from rotating, in order to loosen/remove the filter. So much pressure was required to loosen the filter that the casing of the old filter totally collapsed in on itself. I have never, ever, seen a filter to do this before.
Before fitting the new filter 1/2 fill it with new oil, & lubricate the O-ring with a small film of oil too. By 1/2 filling the filter it will take less time for the engine to fill the remaining space, therefore less chance of causing damage. DO NOT fill the filter as it will just spill out when rotated 90 deg's for fitting.
D. With new filter fitted, new 10W/60 oil inside her, oil upto the correct level..... test drive time.
1. *Diesel* sound upon start-up GONE !!!
2. Rev's to 7200 without any problem in the 1st 3 gears...... btw that is 97mph in 3rd
Maybe, just maybe, Alfenia is on the way to a full recover along with my *faith* in her........... time will tell.
PS: Attached are 2 pic's of the Bardahl product i used...... hope it helps *some-one* else
