147 heater dials

Can these be removed? I've just bought a new 147 and I'm in the process of breaking my old one. The dials on the old one are in better nick though. Also, the door handles are a bit scratched - they're covered in what seems to be a thin layer of rubber or something, which marks easily. Anyone know anything what removes this layer?

The dials can be prised off fairly easily, I used a spoon to remove mine.

Also the door handle coating can be removed using isopropyl alcohol
