2 weeks back into Alfa ownership and loving every minute of it. I bought Cobalt's stunning 147 and it is fantastic. Cambelt has just been changed along with all the essentials and a new maf...perfect!
But....on the way home from picking it up the dreaded mcsf light came on but with no symptoms at all. No lumpy idle, no increased fuel consumption, no fuel smells, nothing!
Having been through a lengthy mcsf nightmare with my last car I knew what to start looking at.
I plugged Alfadiag in to find just 2 codes, P1177 and P1178. With a quick search through various pages I came to the conclusion the issue could be anything at all from a dodgy lambda through to a misaligned cambelt!
Well I immediately took the cambelt and the maf out of the equation as these have been replaced in the last 500 miles by Clovertech with receipts to prove.
I had read somewhere that these 2 codes combined can point towards the temp sensor in the side of the thermostat, so with the philosophy that I will start with the cheapest things first I decided to change this and an ecu reset just in case the air intake that Cobalt was previously running on the car meant that it was running an odd mixture now.
Nope not that.
Now having been driving the car for a couple of weeks (and the fact I cant remember exactly how the acceleration of the 2.0TS engine should be) I have noticed a subtle flat spot at about 3500. So I went out this evening to do the 'unplug maf test' and hey presto the flat spot dissapeared and a few horses and torques reappeared!
What confuses me is that whilst the maf was unplugged I expected the idle to be eratic but in fact it was perfectly fine without the maf in throughout the rev range. Just to check that I wasn't feeling it because I wanted to, I plugged it back in and it became very obvious that the maf is faulty.
So hopefully with a new maf in the car and my codes cleared hopefully I have found my mcsf issue.
Thanks to the forums for the help
So a warning to all that even a new maf can be faulty!!
Has anybody else had the same issue?
Should I let clovertech know in case its a dodgy batch?
Also can you just replace the sensor part of the maf rather than the whole casing, I could do without the expense right now
