Variator question

Hi to All,

I have an Alfa 156 2litre petrol. Since I live in Malta(very small island) I only do about 5000miles per year. 3 years ago I changed the cam belt, tensioners and all including the varioator. I will be changing my cam belt again since it says every 3yrs or 30000 miles it needs to be changed. Does this count for the variator aswell, since in these 3yrs I have only done 15000miles?

No not really. Most people change it every second cambelt.
If your able to do it yourself I'd wait untill it starts to fail then change it myself.

But its doesn't make sense if you have to pay for labour charges.

Usually alternate between the water pump and variator on timing belt changes; like 1st belt change do belts, tensioners and water pump. 2nd belt change do same except water pump and replace variator etc, as long as you do frequent oil changes your variator will last a good while

yeah, every other change, and just remember if it does start to go it sometimes cleans out with a nice hard drive/thrash etc.

I think maybe it gets gunked up with gooey oil or something.
and time to do my waterpump again?! ah man... even if I did the gta waterpump upgrade last time?

I looked closely at one today and it looks like the white teflon washer inside was battered and had very small pieces of swarf embedded into it. Almost like its been hammered into it.
I wonder if its a collection if clag and a weak spring that kilss them?

The variator refurb kits contains a new spring and a washer. If there no signs of wear on the outside I guess the refurb kits could be worth a try.
