Argh!!! Overheating again
Beginning to get wound up with this bloody car. Recently changed heat gasket, waterpump and thermostat. car was running superb untill i drove down to Oulton park this weekend (around 60 miles) about 4 miles from the park the temp gauge shot up to the red. Pulled it to the side and after some poking about i realized the fan wasn't coming on. Took the two wires out the resistor and wound them together and behold, fan came on. Drove to the park and everything seemed fine for the 4 miles, including two extra due to getting lost.
On route home everything was fine, got stuck in heavy traffic and temp guage went slightly above 90 then went down again and was perfect. Got on the motorway and after about 20 miles the guage shot back up to the red again, pulled onto the hard shoulder and killed engine. Played with cables again and started up with the fan kicking in and cooling system.
I would manage about 5 - 10 miles before the temp would go above 90, just before the next marker when the fan would start and then the temp would go under 90 again. this would happen twice, on the third occasion the temp would raise to the red and then after about 15 seconds drop under 90 once more. Taking into account i was travelling on the motorway at 65-70 i shouldnt have needed the fan to kick in at all let alone go this high. Even if i replace the resistor this will get the fan back working but this shouldnt be needed for motorway driving surely?
there is collant in the system and no signs of leaking. One strange thing i did notice the first time i pulled over was the header tank appeared empty but when i opened the cap the tank filled to the correct level quite quickly.
Im open to any ideas but other than a blocked radiator, which appeared to flow fine when i changed the waterpump, im out of ideas.
