Guys I need some help tracking down an extremely irritating rattle.
The rattle has been there for months and I havent been able to find it.
Its coming from the rear left corner of the car and sounds like metal on metal or metal on plastic. Im thinking either a problem with the suspension or something behind the speaker panel.
It sounds like something leightweight as it vibrates very quickly when going over bumps in the road.
A few things to note is that the car is only one year old and has only done 5100 miles so I would be very dissapointed if something has failed in the suspension.
Back in October I had the seats re-trimmed in leather and they removed the seats to do that and this about the time the rattle first developed and it has gotten progresively worse since then.
Things ive tried:
* Checked exhaust backbox to see if its hitting something . Braced backbox so it couldnt move and temporarily coushened the exhaust to muffle any rattles
Result - too heavy to be vibrating that quickly and it cant really move anywhere.
* Checked rear seats. Tightened all bolts that I could find and they are extremely tight. Placed thick foam between seat and car chassis to absorb vibrations. Tilted rear seats forward to eliminate the seat locks.
Result - rattle remains
* Completely emptied the car of spare wheel boot carpet, parcel shelf, foot pump etc....
Result - Problem still remains
* Had a look at the suspension but ive no idea what im looking at
The only other thing I can think of is that it might be the rear speaker rattling behind the panel. Ive tried to get the panel off but failed. Does anyone know exactly how to remove the panel ? Do the seats need to be removed ?
The car is a 147 3 Door. It was brand new as of March 2004
Please help before I tear my hair out
