Im not a person who is "in the know" reguarding Selespeed and how it is meant to work in a 156 sportwagon. Im thinking about buying a 156 sportwagon 2003 with selespeed at a good price with low miles. But when i test drove it, it downshifed on its own but when it came to upshifting i had to use the paddles or the shift knob to do that. Is this the way it should work? If it downshifts on its own why cant it upshift on its own? Another question, how should it work in the "city 1" mode and the "city 2" mode?, i dident try those. Thanks

City mode works as a conventional auto, not in city mode works as you described although i believe it should shift up before it hits the limiter.

as said before, selespeed shifts up when the max rpm in a gear is reached, so if you want to drive like you stole it, just keep pushing the loudpedal !

As others have said....I find it annoying that in (manual) mode it allows you to change up and down then if you approach lights and you brake it suddenly decides it knows best and changes down for you. I have become very lazy and not taken it out for city for a long time. I have the GTV for gear changing fun.

In manual mode the timing of the auto-downchange is dependant on what you are doing, mainly brake pressure and rate of rev loss.
if you are in 5th gear @ 70mph and you just take your foot off of the throttle and coast, you will find it will get to quite a low speed before it changes down.
But if you are again in 5th @ 70mph (obviously no higher... ) and have to stamp on the brakes, then it will make rapid and early downchanges.

The timing of the auto-downchange to 1st also varies, and you will learn that at times it is better to pre-empt it and change down yourself, but don't do it too early as there is a bigger gap between 1st & 2nd with the lower 1st gear of the Selespeed.
