ABS & VDC Faults - Broken connector to blame? (pics)

Not long after buying my 147 I started getting ABS & VDC warning lights intermittently during driving (accompanied by very annoying beep). A poke around under the bonnet shows that a PO has been seriously ham-fisted. Several plugs in the ABS system have bits broken, although only the speed sensor connectors give me cause for concern:


It's hard to see how this was meant to connect, but it seems like someone's tried to twist off a push connector (on both sides).

Fault code C1200 seems to confirm that this is where the fault lies (the other fault has been cleared):


Can anyone tell me how these connectors were meant to join, and is there anyone reason why I can't replace them with ones from a scrappers?
