Alfenia's has a rusty sunroof
Just as I thought I was near an end here comes another *issue*....... rusty frame around the sunroof glass.
Initially I looked at the s/r because when travelling in excess of 50 mph a whistling noise could be heard coming from the sunroof. I made an adjustment this morning but only a slight improvement was obtained. So this evening, despite my earlier post, I decided to have a go at trying to make Alfenia quite..... unlike my wife & kids. Removing the 6 torx screws I carefully lifted out the glass. Bringing to an area of my garage which had a 500W halogen bulb in it, for better light, I noticed a few small rust bubbles near each of the front corners. Then, to my horror, I looked at the center front section to find a strip of rust 9 to 10 inches long, pushing the seal to make it very irregularly shaped.
I got a Stanley knife & scrapped away the big bubbles of rust & tried to reshape the rubber. Crossing fingers & toes I replaced the glass & went for a spin. Around 55 to 60mph it now whistles so I guess its better than before but still not right.
Thanksfully its not allowing fluids into the car.
Now a few questions:
1. In your opinion, from the picture attached, is it worth while replacing just the rubber seal?
2. If yes what glue is used to seal it in place?
3. If it is not what price is a replacement glass?
4. Does the replacement glass come with the seal attached?
5. Any other ideas?
6. Is this a common occurrence on AR's?
In hind sight I should had noticed this rust, simply by opening the sunroof I can see the damaged area.
An FYI for anyone buying an AR with a S/r....open it 1/2 ways & look up at the front section of it. Any rust there is going to cost you !!!
