P0236 over-boost 2.4 jtd 150bhp
Okay so here goes.... Would just like to say a big thank you to all who have contributed to this great site, I have owned my first Alfa for nearly 48 hours and have already found the site very helpful!
I have just purchased a 2002 Alfa 2.4 JTD, it is the 150bhp version. the car was described as being in good working order, it has been serviced regularly at an Alfa garage with no expense spared, currently the mileage is reading 101k.
Went to see the car to give her a thorough inspection and test drive, happy with the overall condition, started well with no smoke. I took the car for a 10 mile test drive and noticed very quickly that the turbo was non existent below 3000RPM, further up the rev range you could really hear it kicking in, in higher revs the car pulled okay and did not take long to get up to 100mph+, although it being my first go in an alfa i do not have much to compare it to. When i finally got out of town and hit the bypass I accelerated hard in 3rd and MCSF came up on the dash, I did not loose any power. I did a few more runs up the bypass and every time when i hit about 4000rpm MCSF lights started flashing. I took it back to chap who was selling the car, he was shocked and said lets take it to the Alfa garage down the road and get it on the computer. £60 later, I have the error code P0236 - Over-boost and Alfa saying they want to spend 3 hours investigating further at £100+ per hours (no thanks), all I could get out of the mechanic was "its not producing enough boost" and that we may need to clean the turbo....
So anyway, told the guy to give me a few hours to investigate as I liked the car, spent some time researching similar problems on-line and decided to buy it anyway at a reduced price.
The list of things i am going to do this week to try and fix the problem are as follows:
1: Check all hoses and vacumes, make sure there are no leaks or splits.
2: Clean EGR valve, Intake and throttle body with Innotec cleaner.
3: remove turbo and clean thoroughly with Innotec 3 stage turbo cleaner.
4: On other cars I have noticed an increase in power when unplugging the MAF, so will do that to rule it out as the culprit.
5: I am probably going to blank off the EGR valve whether it is functioning or not.
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated, from what I have read this is probably worth doing anyway, I just hope it solves the problem. I will update this thread on my progress.
As soon as the car is running properly its going in for a remap and custom exhaust.
Thanks in advance
