I did this fix 12 months ago expecting to last a few weeks. 12 months later I have spent another 2 minutes replacing the floss as it had just started to click again. Hoping this 2 min fix will last another year before I have to do it again.
The new check straps have a very thin plastic shim which eventually breaks and works its way out from the gap. As long as the floss is put in reasonably soon after they start to make a noise (within a couple of months) and not a year or two which gives the metal pin time to wear. The floss (whipping twine as suggested by vasco) or similar will be as good as the original thin piece of of plastic shim. Buy new ones if you want but until mine no longer work with the floss I'll continue to spend 2p and 2 minutes once a year on a fix.
