Absolutely. Check the wheel nuts first (because its free and cheap).
The next option of the CV joints is quite likely. Get them checked out but don`t panic as replacements aren`t all that expensive, even from a dealer. A reconditioned part is approximately £90 for a 156 so should be similar on yours, and thats for the complete drive shaft. Fitting is 30 minutes to an hour.
I ran my 156 with a dry CV joint for tens of thousands of miles before it was correctly diagnosed and fixed. The knocking will get louder and louder over time when driving before it fails (and I mean really loud) so you will get plenty of warning. Doesn`t sound like you are there just yet though.
