156 v6 front exhaust pipe...

First, the facts about the car: 156 2.5 V6, 07/2000, 76000 km.
with the rattling noise from the front part of the exhaust.

Authorized AR service diagnosed that the source of the strange sound is the loose ( broken, burned ) inner tube of the front exhaust pipe which goes from the front of the v6 engine. To be more precise, the part which is located before the lambda s. and before the flexible pipe.

They advised me to see a local exhaust specialist, which then refused to do any repairs and said that the best solution is to buy the new original alfa part and to replace it.

I've searched the service CD and found out that this front pipe is quite costly ( 400Euro+labour ).

Are there any other possibilities to fix the problem with some other pipes ( available in Italy ) with lower price?

thanks,
sinisa

hi cuks, what exactly is broken? the mounting? the flange or gasket? or is there a crack in the piping itself. most of these are quite easy to fix. if one exhaust shop wont do it, find another who will.

Have you checked the heat shield on the exhaust. Could be loose.
AR service checked it and told me that the problem is not in the loose heat shield but it's in the front pipe.
The part of the pipe which has a loose internal pipe is marked with #1 in the image I attached.

I'm in Croatia, I had checked yesterday with one other exhaust specialst who told me that the best way is to buy a new front pipe.

I'll have to call in Trieste ( Italy - 60km from my home town ) and check what can they do about this...

thanks,

I have attached image and painted the problem spot in red. They told me that the pipe inside this part of the front exhaust pipe is probably loose.

i think i have the same problem on my 76000 v6 too
plus a faulty rear window and a possibly failing maf

cuks, nonsense! the pipe which u show is a double layer pipe, but the inside layer is in no way free-moving within the outer layer. i know cos ive scraped that same pipe down to the inside layer. there's no way for the inside layer to move around within the outside layer.

more likely one of the flanges are loose, or the exhaust bracket (number 8 in the pic) is dead/dying.

i also got a hint from my mechanic on some loose brackets for the exhaust
telling me that i should get them fixed or else ill damage the flexible which is hard to find

....so you are telling me to check everything you've mentioned.
I hope I will be able to solve this... the sound which is present is not constant. My AR authorized service ( where the car was bought and where the car was serviced ) was quite sure that the front pipe was the source of the problem. I guess that I'll have to check this one more time...

Also, I'll take a look at the flanges and the brackets....

But exhausts rust from the inside out, the inner pipe must be held in place somewhere. If this has rusted.....

However, check all the possibilities.

the outside layer is "wrapped" around the inside layer. there's no gap between layers. if u just remove the pipe u can see this easily.

What can I say....

Next week I'll leave the car once again to one exhaust specialist to check... ( I work nearly all day so I can leave it early in the morning or try to sort it out on saturdays... )
