Re: GTA no more - home jacked today
To echo what everybody else has said, I'm relieved to hear that you and your family were unharmed in this vicious act. Cars can be replaced, people can't.
I know it will take a while before you will be comfortable in your own home. Until then do what you can to put your mind at ease: change your locks (yes I know they didn't use a key to break in), put up a stronger door, and think about the alarm system. I'm not saying live in total fear and lock yourself into a prison of your own making, but do think about your own security and safety -- especially if you are going to replace the car with something equally desirable by the local low-lifes.
Sadly these types of invasions are becoming more and more common. It makes you wonder if it is better to leave your keys in a hall table or in the kitchen, or to take them into the bedroom with you. If they can't find the keys easily and quickly will the thieves be more likely to leave or will they be determined to find them, no matter what? I think it's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't questions.
There is no way that I ever leave original ownership papers in my car. I keep a photocopy in the glovebox and the original is on my person at all times -- usually in my wallet, although if I'm travelling without my car it gets removed from there. There's no way I want any car thief to be able to transfer ownership from my name to his. Of course this doesn't really matter if the car is destined to be shipped out of the country, but there's nothing I can do about criminals that highly organized.
