156 Intermittent Indicators
I think the flasher unit on my '98 156 2.0 TS has gone 'on the blink' if you'll pardon the pun. ntermittently, the indicators don't work and nor do the hazard lights - i.e. either both fail or both work.
Other symptoms - For about a year I have had an occasional metallic ping when turning the indicators on and a few months back I started to get an occasional odd 'graunch' from the steering column when turning the wheel. Also if using Hazaed or left indicators (but not right indicators) the bulb fail warning light flashes - but all bulbs on indicators work!
I took the lower column cowling off and fiddled with the relay to see if contacts OK. It didn't want to come off but it improved things for a few days but last Friday (very wet night) the gremlins were back. Also when the column cowling came off a small part dropped out - some kind of clip about 2 cm aquare with a spring on a central shaft (about the size of a biro spring).
Would you folk agree this is most likely the flasher unit (or solenoid as we used to call them) or could it be the switch? I have found someone selling both switches and flasher unit from a scrappie - this would, I guess, cover all angles but but the wheel needs to come off to change the switch - does anyone have any advice on the problem and/or removng the steering wheel? I'm minded to check for corrosion in the bulb holders as well - but it seems odd that it affects both left and right - unless there's an ECU lurking in the mix somewhere.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
