Warranty should only cover non-pershible parts. ie. variator, cam belt going early, engine, electronics etc.
Any part that needs to be replaced on a regular basis, (ie. tyres, brake pads, filters, clutch etc) are not covered under warranty.
Therefore, seeing as a rear door handle is designed to last the same length of time as the door it is connected to, the fact that it broke before the door fell off would suggest it was a faulty part when it was put onto the car. Assuming you haven't been abusing it (not that you would) by hitting it with a hammer or something then I'd insist on it being replaced under warranty.
