For the last 6 months or so I have been suffering from a noisy auxiliary belt. It was originally diagnosed as a worn air con pump clutch; a new pump was ordered but the clattering noise stopped before it could be fitted, so it was returned.
A few months later the noise returned, this time as a squeak, a new belt and bottom drive pulley (very worn) solved that problem. Then a couple of months after that the original noise returned; I was convinced it was the air con again so I contacted Ned at Autolusso; his question "Are you sure"? made me doubt it was the pump. I visited Autolusso and had a tensioner fitted with another new belt, that cured the problem.
The clattering noise has now returned big time! So I booked her into Sunnyside and waited! It was not good news, it was the air con pump after all, the bearing was knackered, not only could you feel and hear the play you could see the movement in the pulley. A new pump was ordered. It then turned out the tensioner was also worn, presumably because of the excessive movement in the pulley with the tensioner trying to compensate, so a new one was ordered.
Now every thing was bolted up and the engine started. The tensioner was still jumping about
Vic @ Sunnyside was concerned so started to look for another cause, alternator was OK as were the idlers. BUT the power steering pump shaft was also worn and wobbling about and this needs to be replaced. Not an easy job I understand!
As it is now the Bank Holiday, the car remains at Sunnyside and will be there until Wednesday at the earliest; so I've got Sunnyside's Punto. At least I know the aux belt will not need any work doing in the near future; looks like she'll be a keeper now!!
Guys, just keep an eye on those tensioners
Well, at least West Ham beat Cardiff
But they'll probably screw up at UP on Monday!!
