I feel I must defend the diesel Gt, after the drubbing it's getting here.
I have owned my Gt jtd for three years now, its the second diesel I have owned (the previous being a Fiat Multipla) The economy on these engines is excellent. I returned 740 miles in my Multipla and 805 in my Gt ! (probably a bigger fuel tank and definatley a more slippery shape)
I only use my Gt for days off (work) and days out (touring) the journey to work is 6mins by pedal cycle, so it would almost certainly choke the engine over time.
As for the "tractor" comments, they definately sound rough on start-up and take ages to get warm in winter, but once hot they have a rather pleasant growl. Once warmed up it also revs very freely in my opinion, coupled with real world performance (i.e. you dont have to thrash it to get a good turn of speed) unlike the jts & twin spark engines (I owned a 2.0 twinny for 6 years, see photos)
I have also owned a GTV6 for 8 years (see my photos) fitted with the 2.5 12valve V6 which is without doubt the best sounding V6 of them all, and still returned 400 miles to a tank.
To sum up I would say low miles get a V6, medium to high miles get a diesel
None of this probably helps you in your quest, but it had to be said.
