GT JTD Turbo cooked by Ruggeri box
Yes, unfortunately it was the turbo burning the oil. Although there is not much lateral end float movement there is some horizontal play and as you can see from the photos it was leaking a lot of oil into the exhaust system.
The good news is that I have found a great Italian mechanic who specialises in Alfas., we speak French to each other in our respective heavy accents. He is sure that the reason the turbo let go after only 130k kms is the Ruggeri engine boost box which was fitted to the car before I bought it. Although it does give you some more more horses & improves fuel consumption, it puts too much strain on the turbo etc.
So, I am coughing up about 600€ (including 19.6% VAT) for a rebuilt Garrett (in exchange for my knackered one) and removing the offending Ruggeri box. I want to keep this beautiful GT until I'm too old to drive it and think it's worth sacrificing that extra oomph for added longetivity
