Check service history and especially for any cambelt changes, interval is 36k miles or 3 years, the TS engines drink around 1ltr of oil every 1000 miles, some less, this figure is described as an acceptable figure. Check oil level and condition as oil top ups will be regular.
Check for lusso spec models, I think these are most common, these will have dual zone climate control, cruise control and in some instances, a leather interior, some cars have Bose, mine doesn't, think it's a factory upgrade, but lots of people don't think it's all it's cracked up to be.
Engines, 1.6 is a decent engine, but needs revs to go anywhere, for similar economy, with more power go for a 2.0
A diesel-like sound on startup is your variator on it's way out, this should be changed on the next belt change.
I've had mine for 8 months now, and apart from the clutch master cylinder going, it's been as good as gold.
