Advice please

Hi all

My first post.
I've been thinking about buying the Alfa 147 (1.6 version) so I'm after some advice on what to look out for, what to avoid, running\servicing\typical mpg costs, reliabilty etc etc. and if you know of any other Alfa resources I can take a look at also..

All advice and tips appreciated.

Re: Advice please

Hi chrisobo and welcome to AO.

I think Alfa 147 is in terms of reliability and costs the same as any other modern car. If the oil level is regulary checked and servicing intervals maintained, it should be more or less trouble free. If you are buying used one, check if timing belt was replaced in recommended intervals. Some manuals say to check it by 36000miles and exchange at 72000, but you should do that much earlier.

As you probably know, Alfa hasnt the best dealer network.....So be carefull where you have your car serviced.

As to the costs, my 1.6 alfa takes 8-10 l/100km (sorry I cant convert to mpg)
It depends on your driving style. I have seen 6 l/100km once, but I have seen 18 l/100km too

Re: Advice please

Hi Chrisobo,
Look out mainly for working keys, arm bushes, timing belts.... and thats about it!!!
Mine has been fairly trouble free for the past 1 year of ownership - except for worn bushings, a misbehaving remote....and creaks/rattles which you should learn to live with!

Welcome to the forum BTW!

Re: Advice please

Hi Chrisobo, welcome to

If you're going for the 1.6TS with phase variator (and 120bhp instead of 105bhp) I would advise you to have the variator checked.

Re: Advice please

Hi Chrisobo, i had also bought a 2001 147 1.6TS in January(i am the second owner at 48.000Km), i have made about 2500/3000Km. And im loving the car.

My advice is buy it from somewere or someplace where u can get a warranty on it. Then take it to another place and get a total checkup service, anything wrong will be under the warranty. I did it that way.
Just to be sure it was ok.

About the fuel consuption, i have never seen it under 8.6l/100Km, but as gotcha says, it depends on your driving style.

The main thing is, that its a beautifull car inside and outside, with good level of confort and excelent to drive on any road.

Good luck, and sorry about my bad english

Re: Advice please

Hi there and welcome.

My first 147 was a 1.6 (105 bhp) from jan. 2001. It was a company car which I drove for nearly 3 years (about 120.000 kms). Before that I drove a Golf and a Volvo V40 diesel, but I loved the Alfa so much that one year after starting own businness I bought my own Alfa. Only this time a 2.0 Selespeed. Have it for about a month and love it.

If you don't mind some weird things happening with the electrics (sometimes) and spending a bit more on service and repair (as if my VW Passat TDI is so much cheaper to service, NOT!!!), the joy of driving an Alfa 147 will make it all worth while.

My advice, at least go for the 120 bhp version. The 105 bhp is a bit to whimpy.
