Driving slowly around the village and a really loud "squeaking" noise started from the engine compartment. Got it home and took the cover off and there seems to be a problem with the little spark plug on the second cylinder in from the left (as you look to the rear of the car). There is rythmic "squeak" and some smoke coming from the plug well.
No warning lights are on, no loss of pwer noticed (but I was tootling around anyway) and no temperature rise. Timing belts all appear to be there, and there's plenty of oil in the sump.
Very wary about driving the car...could anyone have a diagnostic idea?
i was talking to my mechanic about this a while ago and he mentioned a lot of 156's having shot plugs (the centres breaking up) and sometimes causing fires as the fuel is pushed out of it so id get a replacement plug in ASAP and hopefully all will be ok.
That's what I thoughtwith it being "on the outside" if you see what I mean. I'm assuming that because it's the "smaller" soark plug, the main plug is firing and hence no drop on power/warning lights/etc.
Not sure how that explains the "squeaking" noise...
