Whilst lubing the clutch actuator the other day, I noticed that the top of the airbox did not appear to be properly closed. I understand this is fairly common?
I decided to get a new K&N Panel filter, and hopefully repair/bodge/close the air filter housing properly once fitted.
Today I set about removing the air box (what a job!!) and what I found was pretty horrible. Seems the housing must have been damaged for some time given how much crap was in and around the filter. see pic.
Anyway, further inspection revealed a fairly big split to the underside of the air intake hose, (turbo side of the MAF) and the inside of this hose, and MAF itself was really oily.
So my questions are:
1. Since I need to repair/replace the standard airbox, replace intake hose and MAF anyway, would I be better off (performance and cost wise) fitting an aftermarket set up?
2. Is there any reason I should not fit an oil catch tank to the crankcase breather, and if it's ok, should it be one with the wee filter on top, or a sealed one?
3. I'm no expert, but I can't think the broken filter housing, air intake pipe and oily MAF will be doing a great deal for performance? Probably help explain my intermittent running problems/lack of power?
Sorry it's a long post, I get carried away.
