Why fishy? He's an Alfa specialist, knows the motors, knows their appetite for thrust bearings, has checked for and spotted end float, told the customer, and has arranged to fix the problem.
It really shouldn't be hard to spot, or to verify, with a dial gauge or pointer against the crank wheel face, and levering the crank in and out. What's it supposed to be, about .005"? (wild guess). If it's pretty bad it'll be visible to the naked eye with engine running and someone operating the clutch pedal.
