Alfa 156 2.4JTD NIGHTMARE!!!
This is more a moan than a request for help although any assistance and advice is helpful.
I've been running my 2001 Alfa 156 2.4JTD for nearly 12 months now and after an initial honeymoon period of superb driving I believe I’m am now experiencing the common Alfa reliability issues.
When I bought the car is had 12months MOT and came fault free (Airbag error light on dash which I can’t shift but I’m told that’s good for a 10year old Alfa) Anyhow after 6 or so months of care free driving the car decided like an adolescent teenager it wanted to have a hissy fit and no longer be nice. Below are the issues so far!!
Firstly it started to develop a knocking noise from the suspension area- A little research into the subject lead me to believe that it may be a anti-roll bar bush issue or such like- My shock when it went into the garage and had to have two new lower wishbones on the front and one upper link arm (£250 bill thank you) Anyhow after having the car back It has been having other issues-
Firstly the car is pulling to the left, now I consider it dangerous yet the garage I had the work done at say it is "camber" of the road but any car where you need a quarter inch turn to the right to stop it pulling is not camber- It has been back in and now they think it could be the track rod ends and are wanting to replace them and get it tracked (Hopefully sorted Wednesday) However they have dropped the steering rack (hope not) into the conversation.
Now I read somewhere that if the steering was not correctly aligned on the power steering after the suspension work this could be the cause of the problem? Anyone got any other thoughts?
Moving on to the other issues I have with it- About 3months ago I blew a pipe off the engine (No idea which one or what it was called but its the large plastic type one near the rad) What it meant was I limped the car home with it ploughing diesel into the engine and as a result it has almost certainly screwed the EGR valve up- Symptoms are no power at all below 2000rpm when before it was so responsive and black smoke under acceleration. Now I have done research and am hoping to tackle this problem on Saturday but have some questions and concerns-
I bought a blanking plate for it as a temp measure but never got round to fitting it- Is this a good and cheap way around the issue? I read that it can cause problems with error messages; any had any experience with one on this age of vehicle?
2nd, MAP and MAF, I’m aware of their subtle difference but I fear that there are mixed messages on here as to what I can clean and what I can’t- Where are they both in relation to the EGR and which one can I or should I clean (dismantle) and what do they do?!
Next it has started to make a small hissing/whooshing sound from the turbo area- I had a similar issue with my Golf previous right before it ate its own bearings and threw them out the exhaust- Turbo inlet pipes are mentioned an I’m going to check all pipes out Sat for splits and tears- Can anyone recommended a cheap place to buy these "silicone" pipes people go on about- I’m tempted it if it is fairly cheap just to replace them and it’s a job ticked off.
And finally....No no human interest story here I’m afraid-
The car runs at a cool 50-60deg which im told means the Thermostat is shot- I've jumped on buypartsby but they don’t sell them- Where can I get one and how easy are they to fit? Im ok following guides but as you are guessing I’m hardly a wizz under the bonnet. I believe the term that could be used is "all the gear no idea" but as you all know god loves a tryer!!
Anyhow that’s my story- I love the car, I really do. It’s done only 100k and everything about it is great....when it works. I just sick of sending into a garage for them to **** about fix something but not the problem so Im going to tackle some simple jobs myself.
Any help, advice, recommendations are appreciated.
