Though I would just end the story, the car is all sorted now and my wife now has a new car which she is over the moon with.
When the gearbox came out the shaft was out of alignment which is what was causing the judder. The gearbox was sent to a local specialist for complete strip down and repair. The main bearings had collapsed which caused the shaft to be out of alignment. The gearbox people replaced all the bearings and two suspect synchro's in the box, my Alfa specialist replaced the clutch and put the box back in and recalibrated the actuator, it's now sweet as a nut.
The whole job cost less than £600 (as opposed to £1500 quoted by the local Alfa agent).
Wot a cracking buy this car is!
