I have just got home after a very frightening (for a "know very little about cars" person) journey.
About a week or so ago I noticed an unusual noise from the engine on my 147 JTD 16V M-Jet (53 plate). Best way I can describe it is like gravel / fine stuff in a cement mixer type noise when revving above 1500 - 2000 ish. It is not the engine which still appears to run fine. Best I could locate is where the air intake pipe joins the engine.
Today, I started the car cold and when it was about halfway warm, noticed a lot of smoke from the exhaust. As it has been very cold, I continued, until it started billowing out from under the bonnet and into the car through the vents!
I pulled over and popped the bonnet. The smoke appeared to be coming from the back of the engine, near to where the dipstick is located. When I took the dipstick out, there was a release of pressure (like when you open a bottle of pop)?
Started up again and got it home, but the engine felt "lumpy" and stuttered when driving. Popped the bonnet at home and gave a few revs and again got smoke in the engine bay, this time appearing to come from front right side of the engine. Not sure exactly where as I was in the car when revving and it stopped when I wasn't!
I have recently replaced air filter and MAF sensor which cured a lack of power issue, but I'm not sure what this can be and I don't want to keep starting and driving incase I'm going to cause more problems!
Engine had a bit of a rebuild 2 years ago aftert a snapped cam belt.
Any help or where to start would be really welcome!
