Potential clutch worn out/ also Q about heavy clutch

So today took the GT out, car is shuddering a tiny bit in 1st gear and progressively got a little worse. I immediately put it down to clutch slip starting. When I stopped at the car park I smell burnt clutch even though I wasn't accelerating hard as I assumed the clutch was on the way out.

Clutch also starts to slip on higher downshifts on the way back home. But I haven't noticed any clutch slip while in a higher gear under load.... yet.

Basically does it just need a clutch and bearing, or does it need more?

Does the fly wheel need to be replaced or machined at all???

As the clutch pedal is extremely stiff and heavy now, should this clear up a bit when the clutch is replaced, or is it due to something else like the cylinder or another part of the clutch mechanism?

Ahh another question.

How hard is it for someone to change a clutch in a GT 1.9 JTD, is it a simple job under 3 hours or a massive hassle engine out thing (being Italian/Fiat group it could go either way)?

Hate getting ripped by mechanics, want to atleast be prepared for a stupid quote and be in a position of not having to accept everything they say. Especially as I don't speak German well, they tend to like to get more out of a non German speaker.

Yeah I read that thread before I bought the alfa, Clutch has always been heavy/stiff, has the jerky/clicking feel in the clutch pedal sometimes. I knew I had to revisit this thread and fix it but to be honest I couldn't be bothered with it, figured it gave my left leg a good weight training workout.

120 000km isn't much for a clutch???? You are probably right but in my other cars I only get from 20-50 000km per clutch, although they are auto clutches. How long does a 1.9 JTD clutch last on average???? If you are saying 120k isn't much for the GT, then I would have to say that I should mention the car has lived on the Autobahns of Germany and Austria with very little traffic or city driving, I never owned it from new so who knows how the old driver used to engage the clutch (a 50+ year old doctor who then bought a BMW x5 afterwards so don't think the car was abbused, driven hard or tracked).

I'll give the link a go, if nothing else at least the clutch pedal will be easier to use even if the clutch is for some reason worn out.

Well an Alfa dealer said it is most likely the flywheel, he said something like they collapse or something, clutch is probably fine but he is guess the flywheel is at fault. He said this is a comon thing in 1.9JTD's. Is this true?

Car still seems to slip in 1st and when going down gears but not while under load. It is hard to tell if it is slip but it feels like it is although the car seems to vibrate a bit instead of the traditional slip that i've had before in other cars.

Anyone know if the flywheel is a common fault or is Alfa just trying to empty my pockets before they get to the cause.

Cheers

You won't know if the flywheel needs replacing until the clutch is off and they can measure the flywheel wear. If it's marginal you might as well get it changed, since it would be annoying to have to strip it down for a new flywheel while your new clutch is still ok.
I've just had a new clutch and flywheel on my GT after 84000 miles. The new one is so much smoother and lighter than the original I think Alfa may have changed the design.

Oh I don't doubt it is worth it for a second, but I was quoted 1655 euros from the Alfa dealer (which I knew wasn't worth it, and from the sound of it they were simply going to change the parts and not even check if it needed changing), took it to an Indipendant today who came back at 800 euros for the clutch, bearing and flywheel. Although I highly doubt they are genuine alfa parts, but from what I have been reading is most of the other brand clutches are rebadged for alfa anyway. Oh and the indipendent said he'll first check if the clutch or flywheel is actually in need of replacing before he starts buying parts.

Got car back today, Had a new clutch, machined flywheel (not replaced) and new bearing and clutch is super light and no more suddering. Can't believe a clutch made this much difference, The car is smoother, quieter and generally better al because of a clutch and the flywheel needing some TLC. Litteraly drives as new again. Such a big transformation.

I was convinced the dual clutch had **** itself neding replacement but apparently it didn't, we'll see how long it stays fresh for though.
