147 suspension issues

Hi all

I recently had some routine work done (cambelt etc) on my 2002 147 1.6 t.spark lusso at my local indie specialist Veloces in Barnet. They did a health check and gave a me list of issues that needed sorting, all are now done apart from the suspension ones which are as follows:

Both rear track control arm bushes worn
Both front ball joints knocking
Antiroll bar play
Drop links worn

I have noticed for quite a while that the ride is noisy and there is an occasional knocking sound from rear and front ends especially on slightly bumpy roads and there it slightly pulls to the left under heavy braking.

I would like to get it sorted without spending a fortune if possible and don't mind getting my hands dirty to do the odd simple jobs but am not sure if I am up to doing all of this myself as my mechanical knowledge (especially as I have never done anything with suspension before) and tools do limit what I can do.

So I would like to know:

a) Which of these could be done on a driveway fairly easily bearing in mind my limited mechanical knowledge and tools.

b) When replacing bushes I would like to upgrade with powerflex bushes so would replacing the bushes on the above list make difference to handling, wear etc or would I need to replace all bushes to really notice a difference or could I perhaps change them in stages to spread the cost.

c) What should I expect to pay to get these sorted at the indie specialist?

Any answers/suggestions would be great.

yes u can do on drive.......all apart from arb bushes unless ur very keep as front subframe needs dropping and more

dont think of powerflex bushes the rear arms with bushes are not that much
drop links as cheap and easy too
whick front ball joint? the come with wishbones........top very easy bottom a bit harder and more costly

mind u if its bottom ones and they ur doing drop links.......its worth dropping the subframe

Thanks for help guys

Had a few quotes from local specialists and it looks it's going to cost around 700 to do the lot, so I will definitely give the drop links & rear track control arm a go myself then get the rest done later at a specialist.

Hi all

Had a go at doing the drop links today & what I thought would be a straight forward job was a bit of a nightmare, fitting the new ones was easy, but getting the old ones off was really difficult as the bolts with Allen key fitment were severly corroded & ended up being rounded off.
In the end I had saw off bolts with hacksaw & only managed to do one on the rear when I had planned to do all 4.
Planning to do the other 3 tommorrow & would appreciate if anyone has any tips as I would really like to avoid sawing the others off if possible.

Use lots and lots of WD40, or as i found even better Plusgas, i had to hacksaw mine off.
