care advice needed for elderly loved one (my bella is ten next month!)

Hi guys,

My lovely bella will be ten next month, and she now has 97k on the clock

2002 1.6

ive had her since 50k, when i last put a cambelt on her - she needs another now - but thats not all!

service & belts 310 + vat
variator 110

wheel bearing 90?
2 tyres 140

so basically between 600 - 800 if i get it all done.

Dont get me wrong, she's been amazing - hardly anything gone for last 2 years - 30k

drives as well as ever (especially after new arb last year)

So - have i got costs about right? (total guess on wheel bearing)

Also, any experience at these mileages? i.e. should i be prepared for much else soon?

my quandry is, the cars worth 1500 tops, and im about to spend half that keeping her sweet

but then again (to answer my own question) i love her to bits so ill 99% keep & love!

Highest mileage TS engine I've seen had done 289,000 miles and used no oil or water. Mind you, highest mileage diesel I've seen had done 360,000 miles.

Much depends on what your replacement budget would be. If the dealer price for your car is 1,500 the trade in price would be much lower and you've got to be really sure about what you're buying. A private buyer would most likely want the cost of the work knocked off the asking price.

If you can buy something pretty new that's great but if you're looking at cars with 50,000 on the clock again there's no guarantee on whether they would be more or less reliable/better than what you've already got.

My 01 X plate 156 V6 passed its MOT this week with no issues and an advisory only on the (original) exhaust, which will need replacing before the next MOT.

If you do decide to replace the 147 make sure it's with another Alfa, then you're guaranteed ongoing happiness.

Two options:

a) spend the money as you love the car and you know exactly what you have.

b) sell the 146, buy another and who knows how much you will be spending as all the little niggle start to come to the fore ...

I've been going to option (a) for ages ...

I tend to agree with Gazza even though my head gasket has a slight leek. Just had it MOT'd, 111,000, there was nothing to do except for the head gasket. I toyed with the idea of getting it fixed or buying a newer Sportwagon but what's to say the head gasket is not gonna go on that. I've put some sealant in, my Brother did it on his old 75 twin spark and it lasted 2 years, I'll be happy with that.
I pretty much know where I am with the 'wagon, yes it feels a bit loose on the suspension bushings and I'd like to get that sorted, but as long as it goes and is safe, I'll spend the cash on the GT instead.
I'd keep your car if you love it so much, 600- 800 to spend on a car through a year is cheap motoring really if u factor in depreciation.
