as i have worked on the product for 12 years i dont agree with that statement but all i am saying is that if an engine is rebuilt correctly you should not have to rely on a spare engine on standby. Fair play to Autolusso, they are clearly looking after the customer but it is more cost affective to the garage to rebuild engines out of the car than putting a second hand unit in its place. What if that engine blows up?? who pays for it then
Are these second hand engines stripped and checked before going in a car. If so i appologise but what if one of these engines is burning oil or has a slow head gasket leak??
We usually have lots of used engines on the shelf available for people to buy as we break lots of Alfas, a good used engine is compression tested & chemical headgasket tested, they are also visually checked externally for signs of problems (oil leaks, smoke from exhaust, crank end float etc) and we listen to them running to make sure they also sound OK, no rattles or strange noises. If we canít perform these checks or an engine fails we strip the engine to use for spares, that way nothing gets wasted. We donít strip down used engines that have passed our tests to check them further, although many people buy used engines from us (particularly twin sparks) and have us fit a new cambelt, tensioner, idler and a set of big end bearings.
The workshop also have fully rebuilt engines on the shelf, mostly they are sold to other garages who need a replacement engine, either as a pure sale or on an exchange basis. Mostly we rebuild customers existing V6 engines, unless they have done something horrific like throw a conrod through the block. Weíve also sold quite a few rebuilt engines to private GTA owners in other countries, where itís too expensive to trailer their car to us to have the engine fitted, or too expensive to send us their engine for us to rebuild. And two GTA engines this year have gone to Lancia Stratos/Montecarlo replica owners as they canít seem to get enough of them to replace the old 3.0 12v engines most of them have.
I canít really comment on Simonís car as I donít have much to do with the workshop on a day-to-day basis, I run the used parts dept. But in general, this is what we do.
