My original Behr 'stat was failing. Temp still rose quickly (cold top hose), but it opened at 80°C (after about 2 miles)...dropped to 65°C, but then never got anywhere near 90 unless I was stationary. When this one was working correctly, it took a further 5 miles to get back up to 90. So, fully warm after 7 miles.
Fitted a Facet 'stat (from shop4parts). This one doesn't have the opening sequence as the Behr. Gets up to 90°C beautifully and then stays there. It seems that this 'stat lets some coolant through all of the time from shortly after starting as the temperature rises more slowly, but still gets to fully warm after 7 miles, just like the Behr.
The stamped temperature on both 'stats is 88°C.
I agree, ideally the 'stat should work closed loop, before it channels it through the radiator. But how much difference does it really make...After 2 miles, when the coolant is channeled through the radiator, the temp of the coolant (and temp gauge) foloows the same pattern.
