156 Facelift grille variation

I have been looking at some cars for sale. Some facelifted 156s have their body colour showing through the two middle sections of the grille. Anyone know why this is? Does it indicate that the bumper has been off at some stage (possibly damaged) and the grille has been left incomplete (black plastic backing not refitted) or did some cars come without it??

You were probably correct in your first assumption.

I had my bumper taken off and refitted to realign a knocked headlight. It came back with everything in tact. The mechanic wasn't impressed and said it was a pig of a job. I suppose if someone managed to complete the job of removing and refitting the bumper, only to turn around and see the missing bit of plastic on the garage floor, the temptation would be to kick it under the workbench and pretend they didn't see it.
