GT JTS shocking around-town mileage

I've had this 2004 GT JTS for three weeks, (coming from a GTV twinny) and I've noticed my around town mileage is lousy!
I did 100 miles on motorways yesterday and the fuel gauge needle went down 3/16. (about 2.6 gallons)
Today I did 20-odd miles across town (how "spirited" can you drive a car in London anyway?) and the dial went down nearly another 3/16!
I make that motorway: 38 mpg, town: 7.6mpg

So my testing wasn't the most exact, but I'm concerned all the same!
Have I got a faulty fuel gauge, or an engine problem, or is this what I should expect?

That's no way to measure fuel consumption.

Fill the tank, reset trip to zero, drive for a bit, fill the tank again noting how much fuel you put in, make a note of the reading from the trip, calculate mpg.

GT 2.0 JTS

Hey led,

I kinda have the same problem with my JTS 2004 and it's been eatting a lot of gas about 15-16 l/100km but I have a faulty lambda probe which is kinda eatting a lot of gas... Are there any errors on your car? Maybe you should put your car on a tester and see if both lambda probes are within the correct parameters.

The petrol engine is nippy but poor by modern day standards when it comes to fuel consumption.A Toyota Avensis which in my opinion is a **** car will return over 45mpg yet the Alfa petrol is lucky to make 30. Another gaulling issue is road tax even the 147 1.6 costs around 140 for 6 months some cars are now 30 p.a.The Alfa makes up for it in driving pleasure and a fun drive but the Alfa diesels are great. Take the 1.9 jtd it does 45+ mpg its a good engine and the road tax is "reasonable" Hence why the 147 and gt 1.9 jtd are sought after models. This is only my opinion and im sure some misguided souls will disagree

Also check the temperature of the engine gets up to around 85-90C on the gauge.

If not you have a failed thermostat, and that will cause issues with fuel consumption.

The TS and JTS engines are not very economical anyway, especially around town.

Thanks for the replies gents!

Roswell - fair point! I'll measure the mpg properly!

I'll give it another week and post some more accurate numbers, but right now I'm wondering if it's a lamda problem, like HollowMan suggests (or MAF?)

Symon - Thermostat sits nicely on 90 when motoring.

Seymour - Sure, the diesels get much better mpg - but I'd be happy with a JTS if it would only get the mpg it's supposed to!

Run around with a lambda sensor problem for too long and you risk ruining the CAT.
