Aggressive New 157
alk about in your face! They don't come much more 'up front' than the eagerly awaited new Alfa Romeo 157.
The mag's sensational spy shots show the aggressive new front end in all its glory for the first time. But this car isn't only about exciting looks - the 157 is getting a new chassis and bigger range of engines to take on the opposition. The triple headlights are framed by a heavily sculpted bonnet, and the prominent Alfa grille completes the revamp.
Sharply creased flanks and flared wheelarches give a more dramatic look, too, while there's an integrated boot spoiler and chrome tail-light surrounds. Our shots also reveal how the hidden 156's back door handles have disappeared, to be replaced by conventional ones. The focus on style continues inside the 157, and the layout deliberately recalls classic Alfa features.
The speedo and rev counter are prominent, while the auxiliary dials are sunk
deep into the dash. Highlighting the car's performance credentials are the sporty steering wheel and gearlever, plus the angled centre console. Key to the model's success will be its all-new chassis. Called the Premium platform, it will also underpin the forthcoming Fiat Large.
With a wheelbase that's more than 200mm longer than the outgoing model's, the 157 will provide generous passenger room. It will also deliver a fine blend of handling and ride, in keeping with the Alfa tradition of sporting cars. Engines will be highly competitive, too; 1.9 and 2.4-litre JTD diesels will be available, as well as a powerful 250bhp 3.0 JTD, which is likely to be mated to a 4x4 transmission. Petrol options will include 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2-litre JTS variants, plus the acclaimed 3.2 V6.
The 157 is due to make its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next March, before hitting UK showrooms in the autumn.
