Most diesels I've had I turn the key to heat up the coil things before starting the car, but if. Do it on the gt, it won't let me then twist it to engage the starter. Is that normal? I have to turn off the key and turn it back again

Mine has similar, despite not being a diesel, when I turn the key to MAR, whilst its performing it's startup checks, if I slightly turn the key past the stop for MAR, it won't allow me to start the car, I guess it stops you turning the key to engage the starter when the engine is running.

I found I had to carefully turn the key to stop it going too far
