As an avid cyclist myself, I prefer using a tow hook mounted rack myself. As for the exhaust heat, I normally take the wheels off my bikes, as they could easily be stolen if I left the car unattended for a few minutes.
I have a 5 foot luggage trailer, which I've converted to a "camping" trailer, with space for my tents etc. and space for 5 bikes on a lid-mounted bike rack. I know it looks bad to tow anything except a racecar behind an Alfa, but bootspace in a 147 does not exactly allow for "camping" holidays. When not in use, I remove the towhook.
