Clutch pedal spring

I have a 1.8TS 2001 Yreg sportwagon. I have recently changed the clutch master cylinder only to find the problem is the slave cylinder. Have removed gearbox and will fit new slave cylinder but in the meantime I am trying to reassemble the clutch pedal mechanism. Can anyone advise me on the best way to assemble the spring on the back of the clutch pedal. I do not have any spring compressors small enough and am having real difficulty in re-locating the spring. I am sure there is an easier way. Any advice will help as I have spent hours just trying to get this stupid spring back in place.
Thanks in advance

Hi jaysam,

I know this is an old post, but maybe you remember how you put it back the spring and could help me so.
