156 JTS 2.0L cam belt change procedure
Has anyone heard of this procedure for a cam belt change by a qualified Indie?
On both the 2ltr JTS engines and the 2lts twin spark engines only the intake cam wheel is adjustable. Before we remove the old belts we check the belt tension between the two cam sprockets and mark there positions. We use a dial gauge on No 1 piston to locate the crank shaft.
The new genuine belt has timing marks on it so when installed as long as all the marks line up and we are happy with the belt tension between the two cam sprockets after adjusting the cam belt tensioner and winding the engine over a couple of times we then start and run the engine with the cambelt cover still removed.
Once the engine is up to operating temperature i.e. the thermo fan have cycled we then readjust both the cambelt & balance belt tensioner's ( as far as i know we are one of the only workshops that does this ).
So once all the above has been done and we are happy with the belts position we don't go to the added expense and time of using cam locks unless either requested or we believe there is a problem or in the case of JTS engines we want to inspect the condition of the cam shafts.
